Newton County Public Defender’s Office

The Newton County Public Defender’s Office is seeking an attorney to fill the position of Assistant Public Defender. Under general supervision, the individual will be responsible for litigating cases, writing legal opinions, conducting legal research, and advising clients. The candidate will also function as lead or co-counsel at trials and assist supervising attorney as needed.

Job Responsibilities

Provides advice and counsel to clients on a variety of legal matters. Responds to requests for information and provides answers, opinions, and recommendations regarding legal issues.

bulletAdvises clients on all matters affected by applicable laws and regulations and of legal ramifications.
bulletResponds to inquiries regarding legal determinations and disseminates written responses or reports to interested parties.
bulletReviews subpoenas, court orders, affidavits, and other legal documents.

Prepares and coordinates cases prior to and during court trials and subsequent appeals.

bulletConducts legal research, analyzes statutes, case law, evidence and other relevant information in order to develop case strategies.
bulletInvestigates cases, gathers information, and identifies and reviews facts and issues in the preparation for trials in order to determine facts of the case.
bulletGathers documents, secures and prepares appropriate witnesses, prepares exhibits, and/or prepares for court appearances
bulletCompiles and submits evidence, legal documents, reports, and statements in connection with litigation/mitigation.
bulletAppears with and for defendants in court, making appropriate legal motions, pleas, and arguments on points of law.
bulletParticipates in jury selection; makes opening statements and final arguments and summations in the defense of the accused.
bulletPrepares petitions, briefs, arguments, motions, pleadings, and other legal instruments, reports, and correspondence, and argues in the appropriate forum – trial or mitigation phase.
bulletPresents oral arguments in applicable forum, presents evidence, conducts direct and cross-examination of witnesses, asks appropriate questions and follow-ups.

Complies with continuing requirements to improve effectiveness. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature as well as attending related and mandatory seminars and/or conferences. Applies pertinent new knowledge to performance and other responsibilities.

Requisite Skills

bulletKnowledge of statutes, court decisions, state and federal laws and regulations and departmental policy.
bulletAbility to perform research and analysis and draft legal instruments, contracts, proposed legislation and legal opinions.
bulletAbility to analyze, appraise and organize facts and present such materials in clear and logical form for oral and written presentation.
bulletAbility to determine compliance with rules and regulations
bulletAbility to maintain a clear organizational structure and develop an efficient system to process a high caseload effectively and in a timely manner.

Qualifications

1. A law-degree from an ABA-accredited law school, and
2. Licensed to practice law in the State of Georgia

Location: Atlanta, Monroe, and Macon, GA
Deadline: March 22, 2010

The Georgia Public Defender Standards Council (GPDSC), Conflicts Division, seeks Contract Fact Investigators for indigent defendants in capital cases in Walton, Bibb, and Fulton counties. We are seeking investigators committed to zealous, high quality, and client-centered representation. Experience in preparation of cases for capital or criminal litigation; knowledge of broad application of criminal investigation procedures and techniques and laws pertaining to evidence; knowledge of forensic and scientific evidence is preferred. Job requirements include the ability to determine the essential physical aspects of a crime scene for diagramming and photographing purposes; the ability to interview others to elicit pertinent information; the ability to rapidly make detailed observations; the ability to accurately recall and to verbally present information concisely; the ability to organize and clearly express information in concise written form. Applicant must be willing to travel extensively, if necessary. Compensation is negotiable.

The Georgia Public Defender Standards Council (GPDSC), Conflicts Division, seeks Mitigation Specialists for indigent defendants in capital cases in Walton, Bibb, and Fulton Counties. We are seeking Mitigation Specialists committed to zealous, high quality, and client-centered representation. The Mitigation Specialist is responsible primarily for the development and preparation of evidence to be presented in the penalty phase of capital cases. The Mitigation Specialist provides the Attorneys with documentary and witness information, professional analysis of issues, and evidence to present to the jury considering the imposition of the death penalty. An MSW, BSW, or degree in a related field, as well as several years experience in capital and/or criminal litigation, and knowledge of social history and mental health issues in the context of capital trials, is preferred. Applicants must be willing and able to travel throughout Georgia, when necessary. Compensation is negotiable.

Houston County Public Defender Office

The Houston County Public Defender's Office has an open position for Assistant Public Defender with a salary range from $46,300.80 to $56,368.00.

Houston is an opt-out circuit and operates under a different pay scale and benefits package than the state system.
